Regenerating the Raceway by the Racy Permaculturists
In 2016, I took a yearlong permaculture class at the (former) Regenerative Design Institute at the Commonweal Gardens in Bolinas. The class offered a unique exploration of sustainable, nature-based solutions. Throughout the year-long class, we learned permaculture principles that make ecological systems self-sustaining such as energy and water supply systems, healthy communities, meaningful and fulfilling work, ecological economies, and global political movements for change. Over the last half of the class, we broke into small groups and chose a site to apply what we were learning. Our group decided to focus on our beloved Petaluma Speedway. It was rewarding looking at a site that on the surface seems antithetical to permaculture principals.
